Schatzalpbahn starts the summer season

The Schatzalpbahn starts its summer operation on 9 May - a special season. This is because the ‘100 Years of the Magic Mountain’ anniversary puts the Schatzalp in the literary spotlight.

As the funicular railway is the first mountain railway in the destination to start the summer, a trip to the Schatzalp in May is a great idea. It is also the starting point for activities that are already possible in the off-season. Our tip: the waterfall circular trail and the sun trail. This year, a hike on the Thomas Mann Trail is likely to be particularly popular. This is because Mann published his novel ‘The Magic Mountain’ exactly 100 years ago.

As a guided hike in the guest programme
The Schatzalp and the Waldhotel served as inspiration for the writer's novel. Our tip for Thomas Mann fans: the summer guest programme offers a Magic Mountain hike. After a brief welcome over coffee and cake at the Waldhotel, you hike up to the Schatzalp together and immerse yourself in the story of Thomas Mann and the genesis of the novel. The Schatzalp railway takes you back to Davos Platz.

Discover the magic mountain
Built in the Art Nouveau style, the Hotel Schatzalp was once designed as a luxury sanatorium. It's no wonder that you can look through Mann's eyes at the Schatzalp and still experience what the atmosphere was like at the time of the legendary Davos sanatoriums. Mann was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature - years later for a different work, but that doesn't make literary scholars any less enamoured of the novel from 1924.
